Student Fire Safety The London Fire Department, the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College want to ensure that all students are "fire safe". Together, they've compiled the following information for students who are currently living in, or will be looking for, off-campus rental housing.

By law, all dwelling units must be equipped with a working smoke alarm. The landlord has an obligation to provide one and to provide the tenant with instructions on how to use and maintain it. Tenants must report any problems with the smoke alarm to the owner. Under the fire code, the following smoke alarm offences are all subject to a 195 dollar fine, plus a 35 dollar "victim surcharge" and a 5 dollar set court fee for a total of 235 dollars.

While fire regulations vary depending on the type of building you live in, a home with one or more apartments in it is required to have properly separated fire exits. In general, a fire anywhere else in the building should not affect your ability to leave. Separations involve fire rated doors, along with dry walled ceilings and walls. Exit ways must not be blocked by objects or trash. You should always have at least 2 ways out of your bedroom. A window can be an alternative exit, but it must be large enough for a person to fit through it. Under the fire code, an apartment must contain a kitchen and a washroom.
